Judy Weiser describes therapeutic photography as self-directed, photo-based activities that can be done individually or within a group setting, without the involvement of a formal therapist or counselor. This course harnesses the power of photography and lens-based practices as tools for self-reflection, growth, awareness, and connection with the world around us.
Throughout the course, you will explore the evolution of therapeutic photography from Dr. Kirkbride to Judy Weiser, learn to use photography as a tool for mindfulness, and engage in self-portraiture and reenactment photography to explore personal narratives. You will also journal for deeper self-inquiry, utilize personal archives to connect with history and memory, and explore the role of photography in social and community contexts. Additionally, you will discover other practices that enhance self-reflection and creativity, culminating in a presentation and celebration of your final works.
The course is divided into lectures that cover the theoretical foundations and practical applications of therapeutic photography, and group critiques that foster a supportive environment for feedback and growth. Designed for all level photographers, this course is ideal for individuals interested in conceptual contemporary photography and psychology. A digital SLR or mirrorless camera is mandatory, and a good knowledge of photo editing software is a plus.
